The film’s most controversial repackaging involves its relationship with violence. In RoboCop , violence is a tool of systemic control. In Chappie , it is a language. The titular robot is designed for policing—a weapon of the state—but he learns to use his hardware in the service of art and survival. The film’s climax, in which Chappie guns down multiple enemies while wearing a gold chain and a cartoonish expression, is often cited as a tone-deaf failure. However, this jarring dissonance is the point. Blomkamp repackages the “heroic violence” of action cinema as a tragic inevitability. Chappie does not want to fight; he wants to be a rapper.
