Several factors can contribute to Error 82 in Autodesk Inventor:

This is the most common scenario. A user attempts to replace a component in an assembly by right-clicking > > Replace from File . If the new file has a different file type (e.g., replacing a weldment .iam with a part .ipt ) or if the new file is still open in another window, Inventor throws Error 82.

Autodesk has improved stability in recent years (2023/2024 versions), but Error 82 remains a staple of the experience. The reliance on the OldVersions folder is a dated methodology. A modern "Auto-Recover" feature that proactively checks file integrity during the open process and prompts the user to restore from a cache immediately would be a significant improvement over the current manual process.

Close Autodesk Inventor completely. Restart your computer. Before reopening Inventor, navigate to the file location and try to copy it to your local Desktop (C:\Users\YourName\Desktop). If you cannot copy it, the file is corrupted or locked by another process.

Error 82 is not a bug in the software; it is a defensive mechanism. When Inventor attempts to read a file's header or internal B-Rep (Boundary Representation) data and finds the binary sequence compromised, it stops the process to prevent a system crash or data loss in the session.
