A central motif in Hallam Foe is voyeurism. Hallam adopts a series of disguises—most memorably a white mask and a red coat—to watch his mother’s private moments. This act of spying functions on two levels. On the surface, it is a teenage attempt to regain control over a world in which he feels powerless. On a deeper level, it reveals how identity is often constructed through the observation of others. Hallam’s masks are literal facades that allow him to experiment with different facets of his own personality while remaining detached from the consequences of his actions.
