The film begins with Ip Man (Donnie Yen) moving to Hong Kong with his wife, Cheung Wing-yan (Sammo Hung), and their son, Ip Chun (Kwan Hoi-san). Ip Man faces financial difficulties and struggles to find a job as a martial arts instructor. He eventually finds work as a police officer's bodyguard and becomes involved in a conflict with a group of British expatriates who are harassing the local martial arts community.
