Released under the prestigious banners of Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment, Kaal arrived at a time when Bollywood was experimenting heavily with the horror-thriller genre. Unlike the typical haunted mansion tropes of the 90s, Kaal took the horror to the wilderness.

The film revolves around a small-time thief, Arjun (played by John Abraham), who gets involved with a gang of thieves. However, things take a dark turn when Arjun discovers that the gang is involved in a sinister plot to kill a police officer.
