After installing Mavericks from a DMG, run continuously until no updates remain. You will eventually climb from 10.9.0 to 10.9.5, which includes critical SSD TRIM support and memory optimizations.
Type your admin password, press Enter, and wait 20–30 minutes. When you see "Done" , you have a bootable Mavericks USB.

Use Disk Utility to format the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a GUID Partition Map.
