The main technical reason for the 3.74 update was the updating of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) security certificates. As web security standards evolve, older devices lose the ability to communicate securely with modern servers. Without this update, the PS Vita would have eventually lost the ability to connect to the PlayStation Store, download purchased games, or sync trophy data.
