To understand , we must first acknowledge the most obvious cultural touchstone: the film Splice . Directed by Vincenzo Natali (famous for Cube ), the movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 before its theatrical release in 2010. The plot follows genetic engineers Clive and Elsa Kast (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who illegally splice together human and animal DNA to create a hybrid organism named "Dren." --Splice-2009----
