In the pantheon of late-90s action-adventure cinema, few films have managed to strike the perfect balance between horror, humor, and heart quite like Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy . Starring Brendan Fraser as the dashing, reckless Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as the brilliant but clumsy librarian Evelyn Carnahan, the 1999 revival of the Universal Monsters franchise is a masterclass in summer blockbuster entertainment.

Directed by Stephen Sommers, the film didn't take itself too seriously, which was its greatest strength. It wasn't trying to be the terrifying slow-burn of the 1932 Boris Karloff original. Instead, it gave us high-octane set pieces, swashbuckling heroics, and a chemistry between the leads that is practically unmatched in modern cinema.

The Mummy, an ancient Egyptian priest named Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), is cursed and mummified alive for eternity after attempting to resurrect the goddess of death, Anck-Su-Namun. Two thousand years later, in 1920s Egypt, American adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah) stumble upon Imhotep's tomb while searching for the fabled city of Hamunaptra. When Imhotep is accidentally resurrected, the group must stop him from regaining his powers and wreaking havoc on the world.

Once awakened, Imhotep begins to regenerate his body by consuming the explorers who opened his cursed chest, wielding the biblical Plagues of Egypt to wreak havoc as he seeks to resurrect his lost love.
