Yvette Yukiko’s early work—primarily black-and-white photography and mixed-media collage—focused heavily on the concept of the "in-between." She was neither fully accepted by the predominantly white art institutions of the 1970s nor entirely claimed by the traditionalist Asian-American art groups of the era.
